Service Description

A scene can only be as interesting as the characters who are driving it, and many improvisers get stuck in the habit of repeating the same five (or fewer!) characters on stage. Breaking out of this habit of repetition will lead to more interesting, surprising and compelling characters that are as fun to play as they are for your scene partners to play with. This workshop will first focus on “external choice” tools that can be deployed to quickly and easily create new and amusing characters. Making bold and distinct vocal, movement and physicality choices will get us into our new characters’ bodies. Once we’ve broken out of our five-character habit, we will get into our characters' minds using “internal choice” tools. Emphasis on simple character perspectives will give us the fuel to play our new characters through the end of every scene, and have fun doing it! This workshop is taught by Jordan Wesley an instructor for Instant Theatre Company. Jordan (he/him) is an improviser who has been performing and teaching in Vancouver for fifteen years. He began while studying at UBC with UBCimprov, and continued training and performing with Vancouver Theatre Sports League, Instant Theatre Company and Blind Tiger Comedy. He currently performs regularly with Vancouver’s Grad School Improv. Jordan has coached UBCimprov and CIG, as well as directing several shows a year with Grad School Improv.
